How to REALLY do Online Video

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I have been totally bombarded with requests for the recording of this webinar.

A little background; I asked Mike Koenigs, my video mentor to talk about the system that he helped create for building, distributing and managing online video.

Most people who saw this webinar were amazed at what we covered.

Check it out.

ILM:08

OK, I FINALLY got the video produced.  My video guy wasn’t available, so I had to to it myself.  (I need little video elves for this stuff).

So here’s the link to watch the video and get the presentation.

Yes, I know you SHOULD be able to embed the video in the blog, but I have some odd setting that needs to be fixed.

Anybody want to recommend a WordPress ninja to rebuild the YPcommando site?

House Photo

From the Commando Newsletter. We built a house in Chicago.  Or rather, I should say that my wife built a house and I threw bushel baskets of money at it.

There are thousands of decisions to make when building a house.

The problem is that my wife and I have different value systems.  She has an eye for design, and I’m a cheapskate.

We had more arguments during the building process than we’d had in the previous 15 years of marriage.

Most arguments would occur after, she would ask me a simple question, “Which of these cabinet handles to you prefer?”

To which I would instinctively respond, “Which one is cheaper?”

In her mind, the price of the handles wasn’t a relevant factor in their beauty.

In my mind, the beauty wasn’t a relevant factor in their price.

So after the fight, she would make her selection, and I would pass out when I got the bill.  Eventually, I learned to avert my eyes and justify the expense as a long term investment.

I might live another 50 years, and if I amortize the cost of the handles over the rest of my days on earth, the price would eventually be reasonable.

So what does this have to do with Yellow Pages?I thought you’d never ask.Directories have a 12 month cycle.  But with so many competitive directories delivered to every house, does that shorten the life?

I asked Dennis Fromholzer of CRM Associates this question.

What is the drop off rate of call volumes from the first month to the 12th month of a directory’s distribution?Dennis has call tracking data on over 80,000 Yellow Pages ads and he knows the data better than anyone. He told me that the drop off rate is surprisingly small.

Averaged across all headings, it starts out at about 103% of average and drops to about 97% of average by the 10 or 11th month.  Month 1 and month 12 calls are always distorted due to overlaps with new distribution deliveries.

Of course, this comes with the standard caveat that for some headings there is a strong seasonality effect.  But the aggregate is surprisingly stable.

This is good news for advertisers.  It means that properly developed ads in a high quality directory will continue to deliver leads throughout the year.Hey, nobody expects Yellow Pages to be around forever, and I’m certainly no Pollyanna.  But it’s good to know that directory advertising delivers.

A day with the Commando might be just what the doctor ordered.
