Microsoft Stuns with Virtual Earth 3-D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Microsoft rocked the local Internet
industry with the launch of their stunning new
Virtual Earth 3-D yesterday.
Describing 3-D local search in a newsletter is
like explaining an ipod to a guy who uses an 8-track
tape player. (Can you tell I was just back in
Indiana for a visit?)
Next Wednesday, November 15 at 12 Noon Pacific
Standard Time, I'm hosting a Totally Free
Webinar to showcase this groundbreaking product.
Why should you care?
Opportunity. The first movers who embrace
Virtual Earth and Local Live as an advertising
vehicle will reap unusually high rewards, because
there isn't much competition.
Microsoft commands a major chunk of the local
search market, but they haven't focused on selling
advertising. When you have an audience without
competition, you have a situation that provides
giant returns.
My presenters will be Roberto "Bobby" Figueroa,
Director Product Management - Local Search,
Microsoft and Greg Sterling of Sterling
Market Intelligence.
The registration link is
https://www.gotomeeting.com/register/289986078
My sponsors have paid the $59 registration
fee for the first 250 people (man, I love those
guys).
You've got to register to hold a spot.
Since plans change, I let 50 extra people register
because I know that not all will attend.
I'm recording this webinar so that you can
review the material or share it with your co-workers.
You'll get the audio tracks, a PDF of the slides and
a DVD combining the two that you can watch on your
computer or on your TV. Heck, it's better that most
TV shows, and will certainly help you prosper more
than Deal or No Deal.
When you order the DVD, I'll throw in an MP3
download of the audio file so that you can listen in
your hot tub. I'll even include the slides for your
viewing and bathing pleasure.
If you order before November 15, you'll save
$20 Sorry, no extensions.
Answer to the Last Redneck Riddle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Buford bought cans of Duff Beer for his Daytona 500
watch party.
If he gives 3 cans of beer to each friend, one of
his friends will get only 2 beers (and be really
ticked off).
Alternatively, if he gives 2 cans of Duff Beer to
each friend, he will be left with 15 beers (and a
whale of a hangover).
How many cans of Duff Beer did Buford buy for the
party and how many friends are there?

Lessons from the Local Search Webinar
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There were some important lessons in the Real
Numbers of Local Search Webinar that I'd like to share.
Lesson 1: Don't give up your print Yellow Pages
(yet).
When Internet measurement guru, Steve Dennen
recommended that local advertisers not abandon their
print Yellow Pages, you could have knocked me over
with a bucket of linguine.
That is assuming of course, that you were holding a
bucket of linguine, in which case I probably
wouldn't have been standing close enough for you to
hit me with it.
This Week in Pictures
You can bet there wasn't a dry eye in the church at
this guy's funeral.
A loyal reader in NYC sent in this great recording
of how to mess with a telemarketer.
Truth in Advertising Strikes Again
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Speaking of truth in advertising, Barry
Maher totally revised his classic book on Yellow
Pages advertising. If you want to learn everything
there is to know about Yellow Pages (and can't wait
for the movie), get this book now.
Getting the Most from your Yellow Pages
Advertising - 3rd Edition"

Hybrids? We don't need no stinking hybrids!

Some prefer to pump their own gas.
I
swear that this guy sits near me on every flight
I'm on.
Hey, don't forget to register for the Inside
Secrets of Microsoft's Local Live Webinar.
It doesn't cost you a dime, and has some of
the coolest features I've ever seen.

This hot water heater is for all my plumber friends
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Necessity is the mother of invention.
Apparently, the father is alcohol.
Did you know
that I wrote a book on the
Yellow Pages?
I wanted to know how to
design the best Yellow Pages ad, so I invited 39
professional ad designers to create ads for a local
company.
Then, 700 people voted on
which ads were the best.
It's a remarkable insight into the minds of
consumers.
$31 Billion in 4 Years (Somebody must be drinking something)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a huge fan of the Kelsey Group's
conferences (even when I'm not the featured
speaker).
It's where the thought and decision
leaders come together to discuss the future of local
advertising (and drink free beer).
Nearly
every major contact I've made in
local marketing either began or was strengthened at
a Kelsey Conference (usually after hours over a free
beer).
Local online advertising
is projected to hit $31 billion in the next four
years (not including beer).
To ride this
wave, attend "Interactive
Local Media."
Tell them you heard about it
from the Commando, and you'll probably get a
free cookie or t-shirt or something to go with your
free beer.
Seriously, it is the most significant gathering of
the local Internet marketing industry. Don't blow it.

I've been bragging about Kerry Randall's book on Yellow Pages Advertising for Lawyers as being simply the best book I've read for Yellow Pages advertisers. The problem was that it was targeted toward lawyers and didn't address other business types.
Wisely, Kerry updated the wonderful tips and marketing plans for any business that advertises in the Yellow Pages.
He sent me a copy for review, and I liked it so much that I bought the exclusive rights to market the electronic version.
His book is loaded with very specific examples and exercises that are easy to follow. I can honestly say that every advertiser (even a guy with a little in-column ad) will benefit by reading this book.
I've seen, and even promoted other very good YP books that sell for $50 - $150, but nothing cuts to the chase like Winning the Yellow Pages War. Kerry focuses on the critical issues that will have the biggest impact. He uses solid examples and shows ads created using his techniques.
I'm selling copies of Winning the Yellow Pages War for only $14.99. That price is far too little for the value the book contains.
However, my mission as the Yellow Pages Commando has always been to help more people be successful with their Yellow Pages advertising rather than to get rich off a few that can afford a higher price.

I'll email the book to you as a PDF document that can be read and printed using the free Adobe Acrobat reader.
I offer a 100% money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with your investment. You have nothing to lose.
